Virginia Governor

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is officially a free man, but he paid a heavy price to get there.

Federal prosecutors said Thursday they're moving to drop corruption charges against McDonnell in light of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in June that overturned the former governor's corruption conviction.

The court unanimously held that the actions McDonnell took to benefit a businessman who gave him luxury gifts may have been distasteful but did not cross the line into illegal conduct.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell's legal team has filed its opening brief with the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing McDonnell was unfairly convicted on an overly broad definition of bribery.

McDonnell's legal team said Monday it filed its first brief with the high court. In it, his lawyers say the federal government has interpreted bribery law in a way that allows prosecutors "to investigate and indict essentially any official they choose."

from Maureen McDonnell

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Defense attorneys say the public humiliation endured by former Virginia first lady Maureen McDonnell during her corruption trial is punishment enough.

They're asking a judge to spare Mcdonnell prison time when she's sentenced Friday on eight counts. They argue that probation and 4,000 horus of community service is appropriate.

Prosecutors disagree. They say the former first lady was a full participant in a bribery scheme, and that an 18-month prison term is warranted.

Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, gave $10,000. Coal baron Richard Baxter Gilliam gave $50,000, the single biggest donation.

TYSONS CORNER, Va. (AP) - Democrat Terry McAuliffe has been elected Virginia's next governor, defeating Republican Ken Cuccinelli after pledging to expand the state's Medicaid rolls and portraying his rival as someone who would turn back years of progress.

Turnout for Tuesday's election was low, and both candidates worked through Election Day to reach as many potential voters as possible.
