Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler has tapped Delegate Jolene Ivey as a running mate in his bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination.

The 52-year old two-term Delegate represents Prince Georges County.

In her statement, Ivy said that she was proud to be the first African American woman to run Lt. Governor and to be the first in the nation if they win.

Gansler’s major opponent is Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown who would become the first African American to become governor of the state if he wins the race.
