With temperatures dropping the Delaware Department of Transportation has canceled planned road closures at I-95 and U.S. 202.

That includes the full closure of northbound I-95 this weekend.

State officials say that the contractor Mumford & Miller Concrete Incorporated decided yesterday to delay the work until after the winter months.

It’s part of a three year major repaving project at the interchange .

The work was delayed earlier this year when the I-495 Bridge over the Christina River in Wilmington was shut down because of damage to its pilings.

Damaged Piers from I-495 Bridge Being Removed

Credit Don Rush

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Transportation officials say the damaged piers beneath the reopened Interstate 495 bridge are being dismantled and removed.

The Department of Transportation says the four piers beneath the bridge over the Christina River no longer support the weight of the bridge. Spokesman Gregory Layton says the bridge is resting on a stronger subsurface foundation and temporary steels towers and header beams.

The removal process involves sawing the piers into sections of concrete, then lowering the sections to the ground. New piers will be erected.

The realignment should take around five days to complete.

That’s two more than it took to re-open the southbound lanes two weeks ago.

Javier Torrijos with the Delaware Department of Transportation told the Wilmington News Journal that the operation is a bit more complicated for the northbound deck.

DelDOT hopes to re-open the northbound lanes between Exits 2 and 3 by Labor Day.

Engineers have discovered that the steel piles under the I-495 bridge that has been closed have cracks across the widths of the two concrete footings as result of steel piles having been deformed.

That’s according to the Wilmington News Journal.

Transportation Secretary Shailen Bhatt also says there is evidence that the structural damage occurred over a shorter period of time noting that it looked much different by Thursday afternoon than it did on Tuesday.

He says it will be weeks to months before the tilted span can be leveled braced and reopened.

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Highway engineers say a crucial bridge on the Eastern Seaboard's interstate highway system could imperil drivers if traffic is allowed back on it.

The bridge, near Wilmington, was closed Monday when its support pillars were found to be tilting. The Interstate 495 bridge won't reopen anytime soon, and the 90,000 vehicles that cross it every day are being diverted onto the main north highway, I-95, further overloading one of the most crowded arteries in America.
