BALTIMORE (AP) - Investigators are searching for clues for what started a Baltimore house fire that left six children dead.

The mother and three of her other children were able to escape the blaze early Thursday, but were hospitalized. Rep. Elijah Cummings says the mother is Katie Malone, a longtime staffer in his district office.

Neighbor Robert Spencer said he often saw children playing on the porch of the home. He said he looked out his window early Thursday to see the house in flames, but the fire was so big and hot he could not help them.

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) - Authorities say a man was found dead in a house fire in Salisbury.

The State Fire Marshal's Office said in a news release that the fire was reported shortly before 7 a.m. Monday at the single-family dwelling. Firefighters with the Salisbury Fire Department found the man's body upon entering the home.

About 25 firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 45 minutes. Damage was estimated at $30,000.

SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) - Police now say they expect additional fatalities from an explosion and fire in Maryland that has already left two people dead and a number of people unaccounted for.

At a news conference Friday, Montgomery County Assistant Police Chief Russ Hamill said he believes additional bodies will be found in the debris of an apartment building in Silver Spring. But he declined to speculate on how many people remain missing; fire officials on Thursday had initially said five to seven people were unaccounted for.

A blaze in Pocomoke City is reported to have left one dead and another injured.

The Saturday fire began at around 5 a.m .with firefighters from the Pocomoke Volunteer Fire Company finding a two-and half story single family home ablaze.  

The Worcester County Fire Marshall’s office says that in the initial search of the first floor firefighters found one victim who was sent onto a burn center in Baltimore.

A later search of the house discovered the body of the second victim.

Three house fires have hit Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore.

Two in Wicomico County

And, one in Somerset County.

A Thursday night blaze in the 800 block of North Division Street caused $30-thousand in damage to a wood-frame detached garage.

Another struck a West Chester Street single-family home at 2:15 am this morning.

Fire marshal documents say it began on the back porch.

Firefighters came from Delmar, Fruitland and Salisbury putting out the blaze in around 45 minutes which cause a total of $95-thousand in damage to the home and its contents.
