There was no decision by the Sussex County Board of Adjustment last night on a request by Immanuel Shelter to put a permanent homeless shelter on Hebron Broad in West Rehoboth.

Janet Idema with Immanuel Shelter, which is open for the cold months of December through April, told the panel last night that there was a great need for such a shelter.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Georgetown and Milton have such shelters.

But there has been strong opposition from the non-profit West Side New Beginnings which serves children – some from poor families.

It was standing room only at the Easton Board of Appeals yesterday as the public weighed in over a proposal to exempt a bed and breakfast on Goldsborough Street for a homeless shelter.

Opponents of the Talbot Interfaith Shelter’s proposed site were worried about the impact on their properties.

But its executive director Julie Lowe told the board that despite opposition from some neighbors and businesses Easton’s Promise is the best location to help people to get back on their feet.

A local church in Sussex County will be asking local officials to approve an expansion of its homeless shelter for women to now house men.

The Philadelphia Pentecostal Holiness Church near Ellendale is asking the Board of Adjustment for a special-use exception.

Bishop Major Foster is the church leader who worked with Brandywine Counseling & Community Services to start the shelter.

Foster wants to provide help to men…who have been released from prison or are on probation but have nowhere to stay.
