Board To Get Total Control of Delaware Cash Management

DOVER, Del. (AP) - The state House has given final approval to legislation asserting that an unelected board dominated by political appointees, not Delaware's elected treasurer, has authority over the state's $2 billion cash investment portfolio.

The House voted unanimously for the bill Thursday, two weeks after its unanimous approval by the Senate. The legislation now goes to Democratic Gov. Jack Markell, whose administration pushed for the legislation.

Delaware Governor Jack Markell Says He'll Sign Same-Sex Marriage Law

Governor Jack Markell says he’ll sign the law that will make same-sex marriage legal in the state of Delaware.

Around 200 supporters of the legislation gathered to hear the Governor tell them that if it can happen in Delaware it will be this year.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the meeting was an effort to motivate students and others to make the First State the tenth in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage.

A same-sex marriage bill is expected to be filed this Thursday in the House of Representatives before legislators return next week.

Governor Markell at the White House for Fiscal Cliff Talks

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware Gov. Jack Markell is leading a group from the National Governors Association to meet with President Obama to discuss fiscal issues.


Markell, who is serving as chairman of the NGA, will be joined by members of its executive committee at Tuesday's White House meeting.


The governors will discuss the potential impact on their states under the "fiscal cliff" scenario, as well as potential solutions.

First African American Trooper To Head Delaware State Police

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell has picked a 24-year veteran of the Delaware State Police to be the new leader of the force.


Major Nathaniel McQueen Jr., whose promotion was announced Wednesday, is the first black trooper to be named state police superintendent.


The 46-year-old McQueen will assume command following the retirement of Col. Robert Coupe on Dec. 21.


McQueen has served since 2009 as operational commander of all troopers in New Castle County.

New Rules for Delaware Charter Schools

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware education officials are unveiling a new accountability system to strengthen state oversight of charter schools.


Officials say new the charter school framework to be discussed Thursday incorporates several suggestions in report published last year by National Association of Charter School Authorizers.


The new charter school rules were adopted by the state Board of Education this summer and go into effect next year.

Governor Markell Launches Reelection Campaign

The campaign is on for Governor Jack Markell.


The Delaware Democrat kicked off his campaign this weekend with eight stops as he toured the state.


At the Delaware City stop Markell spoke to many workers who were hired back when the refinery re-opened in 2011 after being shut down for a long time.


He told the crowd that his administration was focused on putting people back to work like getting the refinery reopened.


Markell made stops at other businesses in towns ranging from Bethany and Milford to  Dover and Wilmington.

At the Democratic National Convention a Delmarvan will be addressing the gathering of nearly 6-thousand delegates tonight.


Delaware Gov. Jack Markell is scheduled to speak just before 9 p.m.


Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley spoke last night


Former President Bill Clinton will deliver tonight’s keynote with a setup from Elizabeth Warren, the U.S. Senate candidate from Massachusetts.

Fisker Gets Taxpayer Money For Utility Bills

Despite Fisker Automotive suspending work at its Newport-area factory in April Delaware taxpayers have shelled out $400-thousand to pay for the plant’s utility bills.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the Markell administration says it must make payments under the $9 million deal with the California based hybrid car maker.

The auto company says even though it has laid off dozens of workers and keeps only a small maintenance team the power is necessary to ensure the valuable equipment inside is in good shape.

Online Gambling Measure Moves to Delaware Senate

DOVER, Del. (AP) — A bill authorizing online betting in Delaware and more venues for sports wagering and other gambling is heading to a Senate vote.

The bill cleared a Senate committee Wednesday despite complaints from church leaders who say it is morally wrong. Delaware's harness racing industry also opposes the bill, saying its members wouldn't get a fair share of the gambling proceeds.

Delaware Considers Expanding Gambling

 

     DOVER, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell wants to authorize online gambling and allow more onsite venues for gambling while giving a financial break to Delaware's three existing casinos.

     Officials on Tuesday proposed expanding keno beyond the casinos to 100 sites throughout Delaware, and authorizing betting on NFL football in at least 20 more sites.

     They also want to make lottery and casino games accessible online within Delaware's borders.

Civil Rights Figure Reverend Maurice Moyer Dies at Age 93

 

            A giant of the civil rights movement, who marched with the Reverend Martin Luther King Junior died yesterday in Christiana Hospital yesterday.

            93 year Reverend Maurice Moyer lived in New Castle with his wife of more than 65 years Vivian Cleopatra.

            He was part of the historic 1963 march on Washington where King delivered his I have a Dream speech…as well as participating in the treacherous march in Selma, Alabama.
