Del. Don Dwyer Files for Reelection Despite Drunken Boating Conviction

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Del. Don Dwyer, a Pasadena Republican who is serving a 60-day jail sentence on weekends for drunken boating, has filed for re-election.

The Capital of Annapolis reports that Dwyer filed to run for re-election to a fourth term on Wednesday.

Last month, House Speaker Michael Busch removed Dwyer the Ways and Means Committee.

Tightening Criminal Penalties on Lawmakers

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Del. Don Dwyer, who pleaded guilty last year to boating while drunk, has introduced two bills to tighten penalties on state officials convicted of crimes like his own.

Dwyer is serving a 60-day jail sentence on weekends, and he completed a 28-day inpatient rehab stint. One of his new bills would make both of these penalties mandatory minimums for the governor, lieutenant governor, and any legislator, sheriff, or state's attorney convicted of DUI.

PASADENA, Md. (AP) - A lawyer for Del. Don Dwyer says his client was injured in a car accident in Pasadena.

Attorney David Fischer says he doesn't know the extent of Dwyer's injuries but said he was seeking medical treatment.

Lt. T.J. Smith, an Anne Arundel County police spokesman, says the accident occurred about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Smith says another vehicle made a left turn, at a steady red signal, into the path of Dwyer's car. Dwyer's car hit the other vehicle.

Maryland Lawmaker Gets 60 Day Jail Sentence for Driving While Impaired

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A Maryland lawmaker has been sentenced to 60 days in jail for driving while impaired and being drunk while operating a boat in a crash that injured seven people.

Delegate Don Dwyer pleaded guilty Friday to driving while impaired in August, when police say an officer saw him driving erratically and stopped him in Pasadena. 

The Anne Arundel County Republican was sentenced to 30 days in jail for that offense and 30 days in jail in the crash. He can serve the time on weekends.

Del. Don Dwyer Arrested on Drunk Driving Charges

PASADENA, Md. (AP) - Anne Arundel County police say a lawmaker who recently pleaded guilty to a drunken boating charge has been charged with driving while impaired.

Police say an officer stopped Del. Don Dwyer's car early Tuesday in Pasadena because he was driving erratically and the officer noticed the odor of alcohol. A police report states that Dwyer identified himself to the officer as a member of the House of Delegates and said he had two beers earlier and was coming from a Baltimore tavern.

911 Call Says Lawmaker's Boat Seemed in "Full Throttle" During Collision

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A witness to a boat collision told police a boat operated by a lawmaker was "flying" at "what seemed like full throttle" before a collision that injured seven people.


The 911 recording of a call made by a witness to last week's accident on the Magothy River was made public Tuesday.


Delegate Don Dwyer, R-Anne Arundel, was operating the motorboat that collided with another vessel. Dwyer said Thursday his blood alcohol content was .2, more than twice the legal limit.

MD GOP Concerned Over Dwyer Boat Accident

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland's House Republican leaders say they are troubled by the boating accident involving Delegate Don Dwyer, who has admitted he had been drinking before a collision that hospitalized six people, including the delegate.  


Delegate Anthony O'Donnell, the House minority leader, and Delegate Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio, the minority whip, released a short joint statement on Friday about the accident, which happened Wednesday night on the Magothy River.

Del. Dwyer Admits Drinking Before Boat Accident

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A Maryland lawmaker admitted that he was drinking before operating a motorboat that collided with another vessel, injuring him and five others.


Delegate Don Dwyer said at a news conference Thursday afternoon at Shock Trauma in Baltimore that he regretted his actions, saying no one should ever drink and operate a motor vehicle or powerboat.


Dwyer did not take questions at the news conference, where he appeared in a wheelchair, with an Ace bandage on his left foot.
