RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia lawmakers have introduced a bill that would tighten rules involving voter registration drives.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the bill prefiled by Del. Mark Cole and Del. Hyland F. "Buddy" Fowler Jr. would add stricter requirements for nongovernment groups that register voters in the state.
It would require voter registration workers to register with the state and submit logs of their activity. Each worker would be assigned a unique identifying number and the state would keep a record of each person's contact information.
The bill is intended to prevent voter registration groups from paying employees on a per-application basis, which could create a financial incentive for fake voter applications.
The bill comes after people in voter registration groups were accused of submitting fraudulent applications using false identities.
