Virginia GOP Lawmakers to Decide on McAuliffe High Court Appointment

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Republicans hoping to replace a Virginia Supreme Court Justice installed by Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe say lawmakers will vote this week on whether she should remain on the court.

Republicans have protested McAuliffe's appointment of Justice Jane Marum Roush in July, saying he did a poor job of consulting with GOP leaders before making his pick.

House Republican Speaker William J. Howell says Court of Appeals Judge Rossie Alston is the most qualified candidate for the job. He said Tuesday that the best way to end the impasse between Republicans and McAuliffe is for lawmakers to vote on it.

The House Courts of Justice Committee is expected to interview Roush and Alston on Wednesday. A vote in the GOP-controlled House would follow on Thursday.
