DANVILLE, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Supreme Court will not rehear a challenge to the city of Danville's decision to remove the Confederate flag from a monument at Sutherlin Mansion.
A circuit court judge in October dismissed the Heritage Preservation Association's lawsuit against the Danville City Council over its ordinance permitting only U.S., state and city flags to be flown on flagpoles owned by the city. Danville police removed the Confederate flag from the grounds of the city-owned mansion after the ordinance was adopted in August.
The Virginia Supreme Court affirmed the judge's decision in June. Local news media outlets report that the court refused earlier this month to rehear the case.
City Attorney Clarke Whitfield says he's pleased the Supreme Court found no problems with the city's ordinance.
