UD Students Protest Outside Sallie Mae HQ in Newark

NEWARK, Del. (AP) - More than 100 people are demonstrating against the lending practices of student loan company Sallie Mae outside its headquarters in Newark.

The protesters criticized the heavy debt burden that students accumulate during college and what they say are unfair profits made by Sallie Mae. Shouting slogans and carrying signs, the demonstrators demanded a meeting with Sallie Mae CEO Albert Lord.

The demonstrators at one point marched onto the Sallie Mae property, but retreated to the sidewalk after state police threatened to arrest them if they did not move.

About three dozen people were arrested in March at similar protest at Sallie Mae's offices in Washington.

Sallie Mae announced earlier this month that it will offer fixed-rate loans for the first time to help students and their families pay for college.
