The University of Delaware rugby team is appealing the five-year suspension after two of their teammates were arrested during the “I’m Shmacked” inspired mob of thousands hit the streets of Newark early this month.
The 70 member team called the suspension by the UD Office of Student conduct “a death penalty.”
The Wilmington News Journal reports that during Monday night’s City Council meeting a university official said the suspension was part of the fallout from the incident that police described as a near riot.
The 41 year old sport club said that penalizing the whole team for the action of a few members was not fair.
Ian Combs, president of the club, said he believes there should be an investigation noting that the “I’m Shmacked” film crew came into the town… to get wild video and then left the community to deal with the fallout.
“I’m Shmacked” is a website that posts videos of college student life.
