DOVER, Del. (AP) - Members of the legislature's budget-writing committee are withholding $3 million from the University of Delaware in hopes of spurring progress on a proposed data center project on university-owned land in Newark.

Supporters of the project, including Gov. Jack Markell, say it would bring hundreds of construction jobs to Delaware, in addition to the data center jobs at the former Chrysler auto plant site.

But the labor community and lawmakers are concerned about the slow progress being made. Members of the budget committee voted Thursday to reserve $3 million in university funding until they see some action.

A UD spokesman said the school wants to ensure that development is right for the site, and that an internal group is working with consultants to study environmental and other issues.
