Democrats and Republicans in the Senate yesterday afternoon…stood up to recognize the achievement of their Maryland colleague Barbara Mikulski…who became the longest serving woman in congress.
She reached that milestone last Saturday after first being elected to the House of Representatives in 1976 and ascending to the US Senate ten years later.
Mikulski has been a leading voice for women’s issues with her latest accomplishment being the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
She has also been a big supporter of NASA and space programs.
Also on hand for the tribute were Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley and former Senator Paul Sarbanes.
