WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Department of Correction officials are speeding up annual tuberculosis screenings after two former inmates at Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington tested positive for the infectious disease.
Officials announced Thursday that inmate screenings are expected to start this week after the two former inmates were diagnosed with active tuberculosis. Department spokesman John Painter says testing is available for staff as needed or requested.
The disease usually infects the lungs and can be spread through coughing, sneezing or talking.
Painter says the former inmates are being treated at local hospitals. He says one man was released several months ago and the other was released within the past few weeks.
