SURRY, Va. (AP) - The nuclear reactors at Dominion Virginia Power's Surry County plant have been shut down to repair water leaks.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the first unit was taken offline over the weekend for planned maintenance on its coolant pumps.
The second unit was deactivated Monday after failed attempts to repair a spray valve that's part of its coolant system. Both units began operating in the early 1970s.
Dominion officials say the leaks are minor and that all the water was captured. The company says it expects the reactors to be up and running again soon.
The nuclear power station typically produces more than 1,600 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power about 420,000 homes.
