Street Performers Return to Ocean City With Fewer Restrictions

Street performers are set to return to Ocean City this summer with fewer restrictions than last year thanks to a US District Court ruling.

During a recent community meeting the resort’s Police Chief Bernadette Dipino told local business owners that the performers will no longer have to register with the town to set up on the boardwalk and that they will be able to sell their expressive work.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the tensions between the local business owners and street performers boiled over when Mark Chase, a spray-paint artist, filed a 2011 lawsuit against Ocean City.

Performers are still banned from the area of North Division Street which has been made off limits for safety reasons.

In addition, they are not allowed to operate a sound device that can be heard at a distance of 30 feet nor can they be within 10 feet of tables, business entrances or the tram line.

They are also barred from blocking pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
