BALTIMORE (AP) - The Maryland Department of the Environment has lifted shellfish harvesting restrictions in portions of three waterways following a decline in bacteria levels.
Officials said Monday that an area of the Wicomico River at the border of Wicomico and Somerset counties has been approved for harvesting.
The headwaters of a Potomac River tributary, also named the Wicomico River, have also been approved. The area is at the border between Charles and St. Mary's counties. In addition, a section of St. Catherine Sound in St. Mary's County near the mouth of the Potomac has been approved.
The headwaters of Broad Creek in Talbot County have been conditionally approved for harvesting. That means oysters and clams cannot be harvested for three days following rainfall of one inch or more over 24 hours.
