WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Gov. Jack Markell is joining other Delaware officials to draw public attention to the threat that rising sea levels pose to Delaware and other coastal states.
Markell planned to sign an executive order Thursday relating to climate impact during an event recognizing Sea-Level Rise Awareness Week in Delaware.
State environmental secretary Collin O'Mara, elected officials and representatives from environmental groups also planned to be on hand at the DuPont Environmental Education Center in Wilmington to recognize Sept. 14 as the start of Sea-Level Rise Awareness Week.
The week will include tree plantings, educational seminars and other events.
Officials note that, at only 60 feet above sea level, Delaware has the lowest average elevation of any state, making its 381 miles of shoreline especially vulnerable to rising sea level.
