Right to Die Gets Marathon Hearing in Annapolis

creative commons

There was a marathon session yesterday in a Maryland General Assembly panel on the question of the right to die.

The legislation considered by the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee would allow those with six months or less to live due to a terminal illness to end their own lives.

Carroll Republican Justin Ready said he was concerned about those with marginal cases who might be pushed into ending their lives through subtle means.

But many brought up the testimony of former state Attorney General Richard Israel who has Parkinson’s disease and who supports the legislation.

The range of concerns included the sanctity of life as well as improvements in modern medical procedures.

The measure is sponsored by Frederick Democrat Ronald Young.
