DOVER, Del. (AP) - The election is over, and transportation officials want candidates to clean up after themselves.
The Department of Transportation says all roadside signs in the state right of way must be removed by Dec. 5. State law allows signs in some areas of the state-owned right of way for 30 days before and 30 days after an election.
Officials are encouraging candidates, campaign workers and residents to remove the signs quickly because high winds are predicted for the end of the week.
Candidates or committees that fail to remove signs can be fined. State officials say in 2012, 1,800 violations were issued, and more than $23,000 in fines were collected.
