Redistricting In Salisbury to be Heard at Council Work Session

The Salisbury City Council is set to take up proposals at its work session tonight to redraw district lines that could see the end of the at-large District 2.

Council President Terry Cohen emphasized that the council body has not taken a position on any proposals or comments set forth by city staff or the public.

Mayor Jim Ireton has offered three plans one of which would provide for only five council districts two of which would be majority minority districts.

Another plan favored by the Mayor would have two at large members in addition to five separate council districts.

The third proposal would expand the current majority-minority district to 20 percent of the city population…while leaving the at-large district 2 in place.

The American Civil Liberties Union has weighed in saying that continuation of the at-large district would violate the federal Voting Rights Act.
