Presidential Politics Spills Over into MD Senate Campaigns

BALTIMORE (AP) - The nasty campaign for the White House is playing out in the race to replace retiring five-term Sen. Barbara Mikulski in Maryland. The two leading candidates are trying to inject their opponent with the "poisonous" air at the top of the ticket.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen, a seven-term Democrat, is highlighting Del. Kathy Szeliga's ongoing support for Republican nominee Donald Trump in a state where not even the Republican governor will touch him. Szeliga, who has criticized Trump publicly, questions why Van Hollen hasn't been as quick to speak out against Hillary Clinton's missteps.

Van Hollen says his opponent "shows an incredible lack of judgment" sticking with Trump. Szeliga is working to link her description of her opponent as a Washington insider with an unwillingness to publicly condemn Clinton's actions.
