NEWARK, Del. (AP) - Polly Sierer has won a special mayoral election in Newark with 41 percent of the vote.

Sierer beat six other candidates Tuesday in the city's first contested mayoral race since 2007.

According to unofficial returns, the bulk of the votes went to Sierer with 1,506 votes and Amy Roe with 1,391 votes, or 38 percent. About 24 percent of registered voters cast ballots.

Sierer will be sworn in at the city council chambers on Tuesday. She will finish the remainder of the three-year term begun in April by Mayor Vance Funk, who resigned for health reasons Sept. 30.

Sierer says she hopes to meet with the other candidates to work toward healing the polarized community.
