Plans for Two Big Chicken Farms Frustrate Residents

Frustration marked yesterday’s public meeting on plans for two large chicken farms in southern Kent County.

Two separately owned sites near Farmington have neighbors worried about issues ranging from road safety and water quality to the smells from the chicken houses and the impact on property values.

The two farms could house up to a combined 30 chicken houses.

But residents were told that the chicken farms were perfectly legal and that the owners planned to go ahead with them.

After last night’s meeting at the Levy Court building Angel Harrington, who lives next to one of the sites, told WBOC that she was left with the feeling that there was nothing that could be done.

State agriculture Secretary Ed Kee said these were the largest chicken farms he had ever seen.

And Levy Court Commissioner Eric Buckson added they were unprecedented in Kent County.
