New Math and Science Standards for Delaware Schools

Don Rush

Delaware is set to adopt a program to bring its science courses up to the national standards.

But the Next Generation Science Standards program that is aimed to make science classes more rigorous is expected to draw opposition.

The Delaware Education Reform Coalition, a group of parents, grandparents and teachers, recently criticized a national math and reading standard program for taking control out of the hands of the local community.

State officials emphasize that the new standards simply outline what students should know not how the districts or individual instructors should teach the subjects.

Meanwhile, there are issues like climate change that are expected to draw opposition.

For example, Rich Collins, president of the Positive Growth Alliance, which criticized the recent Sea Level Rise Advisory Committee complained that the new science standards will indoctrinate children.
