NAACP Questions Chamber's Dismissal by Mayor

official photo

The President of the Wicomico County NAACP is demanding an explanation from Mayor Jim Ireton for his dismissal of Lore’ Chambers.

She had been assistant city administrator for Salisbury for the last 5 years.

President Mary Ashanti said her organization was “extremely disappointed and dismayed” by the Mayor’s actions.

When asked by the Salisbury Daily Times as to whether Ashanti considered the firing an act of discrimination she replied that given Chambers is African American it is “a matter of protocol.”

The firing occurred during an exchange between Ireton and Chambers on July 12 in the common area at city hall outside the Mayor’s office.

And it was overheard by Council member Shanie Shields.

In its letter the NAACP also said that Ireton’s decision to bypass chambers to temporarily fill the position of City Administrator left vacant by the departure of John Pick was “a terrible decision.”

A department head has been put in his place.

The paper reports that Ashanti says Chambers has not asked the NAACP to become involved in the matter.
