Senator Ben Cardin praised the U.S. missile strike on a Syrian air base believed to have been used for the chemical air strike that left at least 70 people dead.
The Maryland Democrat said that it sent a clear signal that the U.S. will stand up for international ban on the use of chemical weapons.
But, he added, that any stronger military actions require consultation with congress.
Cardin, who is the ranking member of the Senator Foreign Relations Committee, said the president has a responsibility to lay out congress and the American people the broader policy towards Syria.
In addition, he said the president needs to provide the legal justification for such actions.
