Maryland Braces for Federal Government Shutdown

nps.gov

With a potential federal government shutdown looming tomorrow the state of Maryland could be seriously affected.

Daraius Irani, executive director of Towson University’s Regional Economic and Studies Institute, told Capital News Service that a shutdown could lead to lost income for Maryland’s 90-thousand federal workers and 180-thousand federal contractors.

The Maryland federal court would not likely feel the effect until mid-October.

A spokesman for the federal courts in Maryland said that there is some fee and carry-over money from previous years.

Military bases will continue to be open but military exercises, recruitment and routine maintenance could come to a standstill.

And, while military members are required to report for duty, supporting activities that do not actively contribute to safety of life and property would be suspended.

The National Weather Service will keep its employees at work because it tracks imminent threats.
