NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Virginia's governor says low-income residents in two cities will soon enjoy the first toll-relief program of its kind in the country.
According to the Daily Press Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Portsmouth and Norfolk residents who earn less than $30,000 a year can qualify for discounts when taking the Midtown and Downtown tunnels in Virginia's Tidewater region.
The discount is for 75 cents. To get it, drivers must use one of the tunnels at least eight times per month and have an E-Z Pass. Registration begins Dec. 1 and runs through Feb. 15. The normal cost during peak hours is $1.50 with E-Z pass.
The state partnered with Elizabeth River Crossings, which operates the tunnels and is paying $500,000 a year for 10 years to help low-income drivers.
