CHURCH HILL, Md. (AP) - Maryland authorities have identified an inmate who was fatally shot after he walked away from a prison and allegedly said officials would have to kill him before he went back.

Police on Thursday identified the inmate as 25-year-old Michael Schluderberg. Baltimore was his last known address.

Police say he walked away from Church Hill's Eastern Correctional Institution on Wednesday. He then allegedly broke into a Centreville home and stole a gun.

Authorities saw the inmate walking on a road and tried to confront him, but the man fired a gun and fled into a field.

An officer tried to talk him into surrendering. But the inmate allegedly said he wasn't going back to prison and reached as if trying to pull something from his waistband. The officer then shot him.
