ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Activists say they'll deliver their first installment of signatures for a petition aimed at repealing the state's same-sex marriage law ahead of schedule.
Opponents must submit a third of the 55,736 signatures needed to petition a law to referendum - or 18,579 - by Thursday. But Derek McCoy, executive director of the Maryland Marriage Alliance, says the group will deliver more than twice that on Tuesday.
Opponents of the law then have until June 30 to submit the remainder. The traditional marriage group set a goal of producing 150,000 signatures by then.
Maryland's new law legalizing same-sex marriage does not go into effect until January, leaving time to get the measure on November's ballot.
