Funeral Today For Victim of Ellicott Train Derailment

Elizabeth Conway Nass, Howard County Public School System

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) - Funeral services are scheduled for one of two teens killed in a train derailment in Maryland’s Ellicott City.

A memorial Mass for Elizabeth Conway Nass, a student at James Madison University in Virginia, is planned for Friday at the Church of the Resurrection in Ellicott City. Nass and her friend Rose Louese Mayr, a nursing student at the University of Delaware, were killed earlier this week when a train carrying coal derailed.

Authorities say the two women were sitting on one side of a train bridge and were buried in coal when the train derailed. Howard County Police say autopsies concluded the women were crushed to death by coal from the train and died of accidental asphyxia.

Nass’ family has set up a scholarship fund in her honor.

Funeral services for Mayr were planned for Saturday. Both women were 19 years old and graduates of Mt. Hebron High School in Ellicott City.
