Four New Charter Schools Approved by Delaware Officials

official photo

The Delaware Secretary Mark Murphy and the state Board of Education has given approval to four new charter schools while rejecting one application.

These included Freire Charter School, Delaware STEM Academy, Great Oaks Charter School and the Mapleton Charter School at Whitehall.

The four new schools are located in Wilmington, Southern New Castle County and Appoquinimink.

Three are expected to open in Fall 2015, while Whitehall is set to open in 2016.

Education Secretary Mark Murphy noted that these schools represent a geographic diversity providing unique instructional models that are not currently available to students.

Murphy turned down the application for Pike Creek Charter School.

He cited the recommendation by the state's Charter School Accountability Committee that the school was not on solid financial footing.

Two other schools are set to open this fall while being carefully monitored because of enrollment concerns.

And another existing school is scheduled to reduce its enrollment.
