ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A Maryland funding formula that sends more money to parts of the state where education is more expensive would have to be fully funded in the budget for the next fiscal year, or else it would have to be fully funded the following year.
The Legislature passed the bill late Monday night.
The Democratic-led Legislature contended with Republican Gov. Larry Hogan over the Geographic Cost of Education Index. Hogan chose to fund the formula at 50 percent, instead of the 100 percent Democratic lawmakers wanted. It would cost $136 million to fully fund the GCEI.
The House approved it on an 88-51 vote, three votes more than it would need to override a veto. The Senate passed the bill on 32-15 vote, also three votes more than needed to override a veto.
