Dewey Beach Land Deal Has Some Residents Up In Arms

DEWEY BEACH, Del. (AP) - Some Dewey Beach residents are accusing town officials of bending the rules in a land deal that could expand Town Hall.

The News Journal reports three property owners filed a complaint with the Delaware Department of Justice over Dewey Beach's purchase of two lots along Coastal Highway for $875,000.

The residents say town officials signed a contract January 31st to buy the land in secret, without a Town Council vote. The complaint accuses Mayor Diane Hanson and some council members with keeping public business secret and misrepresenting facts about the purchase.

Hanson denies any wrongdoing. She says the land purchase will allow the town to expand or replace its small Town Hall. Some employees currently have to share desks, and there isn't enough space for people detained by police overnight.
