Derailed Coal Train Not Speeding

The coal train that derailed early Monday morning near Ellicott City was going at the authorize speed of 25 miles per hour.

The engineer-in-training was at the controls.

That’s according to a federal investigator.

National Transportation Safety Board official Jim Southworth told the press that his team was still pulling together evidence and would not speculate on the cause of the crash.

Two 19-year-old college students – one of which was a nursing student at the University of Delaware were killed while sitting on a rail bridge in the historic section of Ellicott City as the train passed a few feet behind them.

18 of the 21 derailed cars have been removed.

It could be another two days before the area is clear.
