Delmarva Marks MLK Holiday

Delaware marked Martin Luther King Junior day with parades and ceremonies.

In Wilmington seven high schools held a contest that included speeches, poetry and rap on how King had affected their hopes and dreams.

One 15-year old told the Wilmington News Journal that King was the foundation for a better future.

The event was sponsored by the YWCA Delaware and Christ Church Christiana Hundred.

Meanwhile, the Wilmington Riverside neighborhood saw around a 100 volunteers create a 882 square-foot mural at the Kingswood Community Center depicting their experiences.

At Delaware State University around 75 literacy kits were put together and distributed at Dover’s His Father’s Kingdom Church and Solid Rock Community Outreach Center.

The Bellevue Community Center in Brandywine Hundred held a number of activities including reading to children and organizing clothing at the center for women in transition.

Wicomico Youth and Civic Center

In Salisbury young children and teens gathered at the Wicomico Youth and Civic Center for the 30th Annual Youth Activity Celebration.

In celebrating Martin Luther King Junior holiday the program included a breakfast with dancers, singers and student speakers.

13 year Jocelyn told the Salisbury Daily Times that the event turned out great adding that she was happy legal segregation was over.

Meanwhile, Rosemary Hudson, the event coordinator who went to school in the 1957’s during the Jim Crow era, looked upon the day as a time of service others.
