Delaware Treasury Official Racks Up Thousands in Expenses

DOVER, Del. (AP) – The Delaware deputy state treasurer racked up thousands of dollars in personal expenses on her state-issued credit card.

The Wilmington News Journal says Erika Benner’s expenses include more than $1,000 for football tickets and private car service to a New England Patriots game.

Benner has been out on short-term disability to seek treatment for an undisclosed medical condition. She was questioned about the charges in June by Finance Department officials.

Benner said she never intended to steal from taxpayers and blamed the inappropriate charges on a “medical disease.”

State officials say Benner ultimately reimbursed the state for all charges, though it often took more than a month.

The treasurer’s office says she probably won’t be disciplined until she returns to the office.
