Delaware is having some trouble keeping its teachers.
After only a few years on the job a significant number leave the state…while new teachers are often getting assigned students who need the most help.
That’s the conclusion of findings by the Strategic Data Project, a Harvard group that has been analyzing the state’s statistics.
The study found that more than 15 percent of teachers don’t continue in the same school the following year.
The Wilmington News Journal reports that study concluded that the loss is more serious among new teachers and at high-poverty schools where the turnover is more than 23 percent.
John Sell, the current State Teacher of the Year, acknowledged to the paper that new teachers face some tough challenges.
He added that technology, tougher reporting requirements and new standardized tests have made the job even more difficult.
