Delaware Bids Farewell to Tim McClanahan

Lewes Fire Department Facebook Page

Sunday marked the final moment for Delawareans to say goodbye to Tim McClanahan.

His funeral was held at the Cape Henlopen High School followed by a ceremony outside the Lewes Fire Hall.

The Lewes fireman was killed early last week during an accident in which he fell from a helicopter during a training exercise.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that it was a procedure the 46-year old fireman had done thousands of times before and loved to do.

Ted Robertson told the paper that McClanahan was a hero doing what he loved to do.

Earlier in the week a three mile line of emergency vehicles and motorcycles formed a procession that took his body from the Medical Examiner’s office in Wilmington to Lewes.

His brother Sean implored those at the funeral to make the most of the time they have with their loved ones.

McClanahan leaves behind two children and his fiancé Kim as well as his parents.

Governor Jack Markell (D-De)

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - State officials are encouraging Delawareans to serve their communities as members of local volunteer fire companies.

Legislation being signed by Gov. Jack Markell should make the recruitment process a little easier.

Markell plans to sign a bill on Tuesday that exempts anyone applying for membership in a volunteer fire company from paying the cost of the required criminal background check done by the State of Delaware Bureau of Identification.
