Deal for More State Police in Sussex County

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) - Sussex County officials have reached an agreement with Delaware State Police on state troopers patrolling unincorporated areas of the county.

Authorities are resuming terms of a 2007 contract that pays for additional troopers to be assigned to Sussex County. Under that agreement, the county pays part of the salaries of 40 additional troopers above the normal complement assigned to the three state police units in Sussex.

The contract called for four more troopers to be added every year, but officials agreed in 2009 to delay adding officers until economic conditions improved. The new agreement means four more officers will be added by spring 2013, bringing the total of additional troopers to 44.

the county is budgeted to pay the state $1.7 million for 40 extra troopers this fiscal year.
