Civil Rights Coalition Rally Against President's Immigration Order

Delaware Civil Rights Coalition

More than 35 people gathered outside Legislative Hall in Dover denouncing the President’s executive order suspending the Syrian refugee program and banned immigrants from seven predominantly Muslim countries.

At the rally held by the Delaware Civil Rights Coalition Iram Shauka with the Women of the Islamic Society of Delaware read out a poem urging tolerance.

“I am your equal. I am your ally. I am your friend, your neighbor, your family. Not a terrorist, and not a spy.”

Reverend Bruce Gillette, co-pastor of Limestone Presbyterian, called upon the president to “remember what made this country great, a nation of immigrants, a nation of diversity, a nation filled with people of all faiths, who enrich this nation together."

There have been massive protests since the executive order was issued on Friday and saw large numbers flock to the airports where a number of immigrants found themselves facing delays, detention and deportation.

Coalition organizer Charito Calvachi-Mateyko from Ecuador told the Wilmington News Journal that America’s welcoming inclusiveness is a shining beacon to the whole world.
