Chincoteague Awaits Tomorrow's Pony Swim

crative commons wikimedia

Get ready for the annual pony swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague.

Tomorrow the ponies will make their way across the Assateague Channel during what is called slack tide.

There will be private boats so that visitors can view the crossing from the water.

Many more will gather at Memorial Park to view the annual event that was made famous in the 1940’s novel “Misty of Chincoteague” by Marguerite Henry.

The event organizers are urging people to bring plenty of water and sun screen.

On Thursday the ponies will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Chincoteague Fire Department.

Those ponies not sold or are returned after the auction will spend another year on Assateague Island.
