DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware is seeing an uptick in bicycle-related deaths.
Delaware State News reported Friday that five bicyclists have been killed so far this year. Three died in 2016.
The latest death involved a 76-year-old man who was struck by a pickup near Milford on Sept. 7. He was wearing a helmet and reflective equipment. The accident remains under investigation.
In 2015, the League of American Bicyclists ranked Delaware third for its positive approach to bicycle legislation, policies and infrastructure. But crashes still happen. The Delaware Office of Highway safety reports an annual average of 154 vehicle-bike crashes.
The growth in cycling has posed challenges for both drivers and bike riders to share the road. The chance of a fatality skyrockets if the speeds involved are 25 mph or more.
