Bethany's Steens Beach Service Could Be No More

Don Rush

Steens Beach Service may disappear from Bethany Beach.

Since 1957 the concession stand has provided umbrellas and chairs creating memories for many who have graced the resort’s shores.

But now Bethany is looking at taking over the concession service altogether.

The plan was presented by Town Manager Cliff Graviet to the council yesterday and outlined how the resort could have its own service up and running by May 16th.

The town concession could bring in an estimated $200,000 a year.

But Ron Steen says that his company’s offer was fair and that the estimated revenue in the plan was an overestimation.

The Steens learned of the proposal just prior to submitting the only bid for the concession for $67,500 in early November.

That was a 4 percent increase from $65-thousand for last year.

A meeting with town officials about the issue was to take place days later.
