Attorney for Former Dover Police Officer Asks Justice Dept. Probe of Chief

doverpolice.org

James Liguori, attorney for Webster for former Dover police officer Thomas Webster, is asking the Delaware Department of Justice to investigate Chief Paul Bernat in the internal investigation of his police abuse case.

He charges that the chief’s conduct was “unprofessional, disingenuous and sneaky.”

The Wilmington News Journal reports that the internal investigation recommended no action be taken in the 2013 incident in which Webster was seen on a dash cam kicking Lateef Dickerson in the head.

The incident left the suspect with a broken jaw and unconscious and provoked community outrage when it was released.

The paper reported that Chief Bernat initially agreed with the recommendation but then changed his mind about sanctions against the officer.

Webster was eventually tried for assault but was ultimately acquitted.

The Dover police Department declined to comment and referred all questions to Bernat’s attorney.
