DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware has been awarded more than $300,000 in federal grants for projects aimed at the state's specialty crop industry.

The state Department of Agriculture made the announcement Tuesday. Delaware Ag Secretary Ed Kee says the grants are funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. The initiative was designed to promote crops such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and horticulture plants.

Kee says the research and educational opportunities will help growers and allied businesses in both the short and long term.

Among some of the projects funded through this year's grants are edible truffle mushrooms, environmental benefits of real Christmas trees and lima bean research.
