Heavy Rains Hit Region (Update)

LAUREL, Md. (AP) - Officials ordered hundreds of people to leave their homes in Laurel after heavy rains prompted a release from two dams in the area.

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission says the Brighton Dam in Brookville and all seven gates at the T. Howard Duckett Dam in Laurel were opened Wednesday as a precaution and will remain open for several hours Thursday morning. It's unclear how long it will take for water to recede.

High Winds Knock Out Power on Delmarva

Many electric customers were without power last night as blustery winds hit Delaware and parts of Maryland.

At 4:45 a.m. this morning Delmarva Power still reported around 17-hundred people without power.

1,200 of those were in Somerset County.

In New Castle County there were around 300 while in Cecil County around 160 were without power.

The Delaware Department of Transportation reports that trees were downed and closed a number of roads.

Flood Advisory for New Castle County

There’s a flood advisory for New Castle County.

It’s the result of a storm that has hit northern Delaware with ice and freezing rain.

Dozens of roads have been closed as the result of downed trees and wires.

There have been numerous power outages with Delmarva Power reporting some 14,-thousand customers without electricity.

Around 69-hundred are located in New Castle County.

The rest are in Cecil and Harford counties in Maryland.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service is forecasting another storm – perhaps the worst this winter.

Weekend Road Closures in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Delaware transportation officials are reminding motorists of a major road closure in Wilmington over the weekend.

Interstate 95 north and southbound at the U.S. 202 interchange will be closed starting at 9 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday.

Traffic will be detoured as crews demolish the existing bridge ramp from northbound I-95 to northbound U.S. 202 and replace two girders on the U.S. 202 bridge over I-95. Ramps from U.S. 202 southbound onto I-95 northbound and U.S. 202 northbound onto I-95 southbound also will be closed.
