The oyster restoration project has been wrapped up at Harris Creek.

Over the last four years the area has been declared a sanctuary keeping watermen from harvesting oysters there.

But WBOC reports that yesterday the last of the oysters were thrown overboard to settle on the bottom of the river.

Peyton Robertson, director the Chesapeake Bay office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told the station that around 2 billion oysters have been plants over the 350 acres.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A survey has found Maryland's oyster population has more than doubled since 2010.

Maryland's 2013 Fall Oyster Survey was released Wednesday by the Department of Natural Resources.

The survey says the oyster population is at its highest point since this type of monitoring began in 1985.

The increase is being attributed to high oyster survival over the past few years and strong reproduction in 2010 and 2012.

Big numbers for his year’s oyster harvest and 300 new watermen on the Chesapeake Bay means state rationing of oyster tags to prevent them from completely running out.

The agency issues the tags at the beginning of the season in October based on the number a waterman used the previous season.

Those with no history get 200 tags.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that Mike Naylor, director of the shellfish program for the Department of Natural Resources, says that when the harvest began getting bettermore people signed up.
