Oyster Harvest in Virginia, Up Dramatically

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia is marking its largest oyster harvest in more than 25 years.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced on Monday that the state's oyster harvest jumped 25 percent last year to the highest seen since 1987.

Over the past 12 years, Virginia's oyster harvest has increased from 23,000 bushels in 2001 to about 504,000 bushels last year. The harvest numbers include wild oysters and those grown in aquaculture farms.

The dockside value of the oyster harvest increased to $22.2 million last year, up from $16.2 million in 2012.

Oyster Harvest is Up in the Chesapeake Bay

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A survey has found Maryland's oyster population has more than doubled since 2010.

Maryland's 2013 Fall Oyster Survey was released Wednesday by the Department of Natural Resources.

The survey says the oyster population is at its highest point since this type of monitoring began in 1985.

The increase is being attributed to high oyster survival over the past few years and strong reproduction in 2010 and 2012.

Rationing Oyster Harvesting Permits

Big numbers for his year’s oyster harvest and 300 new watermen on the Chesapeake Bay means state rationing of oyster tags to prevent them from completely running out.

The agency issues the tags at the beginning of the season in October based on the number a waterman used the previous season.

Those with no history get 200 tags.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that Mike Naylor, director of the shellfish program for the Department of Natural Resources, says that when the harvest began getting bettermore people signed up.
